Frequently asked questions

  • How do I get a Mexican passport?

Mexican citizenship is obtained by right of blood or land, through adoption, marriage, ancestry, state service, naturalization, or a passport of a Latin American or Iberian Peninsula country.

To obtain Mexican citizenship by naturalisation, one must have lived in the country for at least 5 years, passed the country’s language and history knowledge tests, and have no criminal record.

A Mexican passport by marriage can be obtained in 2 years or more. The couple will need to prove that their marriage is not fictitious.

  • Does Mexico recognize dual citizenship?

Although this is not explicitly stated in Mexican law, a 1998 amendment preserves Mexican citizenship by birth when obtaining foreign citizenship. When obtaining Mexican citizenship, there is no requirement to renounce your previous nationality.

Mexicans who reside abroad retain property rights, access to a business registered in Mexico, and the unrestricted rights of inheritance.

  • Who can get Mexican citizenship by birthright?

Mexican citizenship can be obtained by right of blood if a child was born to citizens of the country. In this case, the place of birth does not matter.

Citizenship by right of land can be obtained by any child born in the country or on a Mexican ship or plane.
