What does German citizenship give you?

  • 1

Residence in Germany or another EU country

Germany is a member of the European Union. Citizenship of this country allows you to live on its territory or move to another European country. You will not need a residence permit in another EU country — just register after three months of residence.

  • 2

    Does Germany recognise second citizenship?

When obtaining German citizenship by naturalisation, you must renounce the citizenship of other countries, but there are exceptions. Citizens of the European Union and Switzerland, as well as migrants, can retain multiple citizenship.

  • 3

How to live in Germany with citizenship of another state?

Germany is a member of the European Union, so you can move there using a simplified procedure with a passport of one of the EU countries — for example, Portugal or Malta.

  • 4

    Work and international business

A German passport allows you to open a company in this country or another European state. To work in the European Union, you won’t need to obtain a residence permit or work permit in advance.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I get a German passport?

German citizenship is obtained by right of blood, right of soil, through adoption, marriage, naturalisation and repatriation.

To obtain German citizenship by naturalisation, you must have lived in the country for at least eight years, passed a test on knowledge of the language, legal and social structure of Germany, and have no criminal record. The period before obtaining citizenship can be reduced to six years if you pass the language proficiency exam at level B2 or higher.

A German passport by marriage can be obtained after three years of residence in the country. The marriage must be maintained for at least two years after obtaining the status.

  • Does Germany recognise second citizenship?

When obtaining German citizenship by naturalisation, you must renounce the citizenship of other countries, but there are exceptions. Citizens of the European Union and Switzerland, as well as migrants, can retain multiple citizenship.

  • How to live in Germany with citizenship of another state?

A child with a German passport can study undergraduate programs in German schools and universities for free. It is also easier for them to enroll in a university in another EU country, and the cost of training will be lower than for a citizen of a country outside the union.

  • Who can get German citizenship by birthright?

A German passport allows you to open a company in this country or another European state. To work in the European Union, you won’t need to obtain a residence permit or work permit in advance.
